ROP or retinopathy of Pre maturity is a leading cause of childhood blindness. With the increase in the survival rates of pre mature infants the condition needs to be studied in its multifarious complexities. In India, there is a real dearth of reliable population based data. This complicates the delivery of care and treatment.
We plan to address this problem with a three-pronged approach
Fully equipped sustainable and subsidized clinic for Pediatric Ophthalmology combined with training of ophthalmologists in screening and treatment delivery where possible
Delivery of best possible treatment and post treatment care to patients with ROP
GP, health worker and patient education in risk factors and the need for comprehensive checkups for high-risk infants.
Population based studies which will fill a much needed gap in the existing literature
There is an acute need for a dedicated pediatric ophthalmology clinic working on comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Currently pediatric services are limited to cataract and squint mainly, with no sharp focus on other eye disorders including glaucoma, uvea and neurological disorders. A comprehensive set of services from screening to rehabilitation is addressed by this facility.
